After spending $715 million on its first AI R&D center in Asia, NVIDIA was able to construct its second facility in Taiwan in just two years.
Two years ago, NVIDIA established its first AI R&D center in Asia in Taiwan, hiring 400 people and investing NT$24.3 billion ($715 million USD) in the facility. However, it currently seems that the business is thinking of opening a second R&D facility in Taiwan.
The Technology Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs stated in a recent post published by the China Times on April 26 that NVIDIA's current research and development (R&D) is "going smoothly" and that it will "assist our manufacturers in AI application development". According to reports, they are pleased with Taiwan's talent pool and are thinking about opening a second R&D facility there.
NVIDIA's first research and development facility in Taiwan is primarily focused on GPU development and AI chip research and development. The R&D center also contributed to the construction of Taipei-1, Taiwan's largest supercomputer, with a NT$6.7 billion ($205 million USD) grant from the Taiwanese government for NVIDIA's initial R&D center project.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs' director of technology, Qiu Qiuhui, stated that NVIDIA's investment plan in Taiwan comprises training new AI talent at National Taiwan University and Tsinghua University, sharing supercomputer resources within the industry, and establishing a research and development center, all of which have benefited 6,700 people thus far.
According to China Times, NVIDIA is pleased with the "quality and cost of Taiwan's human resources." Hardware, infrastructure, and skill are areas where Taiwan excels. The China Times notes that the semiconductor ecosystem "is complete" in Taiwan, and they are not incorrect. Taiwanese employees are extremely competent and disciplined in their job.
