Apple is in the final stages of conversations with Murugappa Group and Tata Group's Titan Company about assembling and maybe manufacturing sub-components for iPhone camera modules. This move may expand Apple's reliance on the Indian supplier ecosystem for its goods as the company continues to shift operations away from China.
At now, there are no Indian vendors offering the camera module for the Apple iPhone. It would be the first because of the cooperation with either Titan or Murugappa Group. According to the article, a final partner selection should be made within the next five to six months. One of the Apple iPhone's most advanced technological components is the camera module. While the Pro versions include an advanced triple camera arrangement, the non-Pro variants only have a duo camera.
Why Murugappa and Titan?
High-precision manufacturing is a strong suit for both the Titan and Murugappa organizations. Murugappa Group purchased a 76% share in Noida-based Moshine Electronics, a manufacturer of camera modules, in 2022.
Titan Engineering and Automation, which serves clients worldwide in sectors including aerospace and defense, is owned by Titan Company. Government incentives are available to Titan and Murugappa for establishing semiconductor chip manufacturing plants in India. In Dholera, Gujarat, Tata Group is also constructing a $11 billion chip factory.
By procuring locally, Apple may be able to cut costs and become less reliant on Chinese vendors. Apple has stepped up its efforts to manufacture in India, using the production-linked incentive (PLI) program as support. Approximately 70% of iPhones made in India are exported, and this percentage is expected to rise.
