Within the next two to three years, Apple and its suppliers intend to produce more than 50 million iPhones in India. In other words, according to The Wall Street Journal, the tech giant plans to produce a quarter of the world's iPhones. If Cupertino, California-based Apple's objectives are realized, a quarter of worldwide iPhone production will take place in India. However, China will continue to be the world's leading iPhone producer. Hundreds of thousands of people are employed at the main Foxconn plants in China. It is worth noting that the iPhone maker is facing an uphill battle as it intends to relocate production from China to elsewhere.
Foxconn, Apple's primary and largest contract manufacturer and supplier, intends to build new manufacturing plants in India, while Tata Group plans to build one of the country's largest iPhone assembly plants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Bloomberg reported on Friday that India's largest conglomerate is considering building one of the country's largest iPhone assembly plants, coinciding with Apple Inc.'s goal of increasing production in the South Asian nation. According to reports, Apple has relocated 7% of search iPhone assembly to India. Apple's contract manufacturer Foxconn's production site near Chennai is also producing the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models.
The proposed manufacturing unit is likely to be situated in Hosur, in Tamil Nadu. The factory is expected to be operational in 12 to 18 months, with around 20 assembly lines and a workforce of 50,000 within two years, according to the article. Currently, the Indian conglomerate oversees an iPhone manufacturing operation acquired from Wistron Corp. in Karnataka, India's southernmost state.
Tata Group is planning to produce Apple iPhones in the country for both domestic and foreign markets, according to IT Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The MoS IT also congratulated Tata Group for assuming control of Wistron's unit. Tata Group has thus become the first domestic iPhone manufacturer.
