Apple is set to open its fourth iPhone assembly plant in India by the end of this year, with Tata Electronics starting production at its new facility in Tamil Nadu's Hosur in November. This will be the second iPhone assembly unit for Tata Electronics, following its acquisition of Wistron's facility.
The 250-acre plant, which already houses a Tata components factory, is expected to receive an investment of ₹6,000 crore and employ around 50,000 workers, predominantly women. This expansion aligns with Apple's strategy to localize its supply chain and diversify operations outside China by partnering with manufacturers in India, Thailand, and Malaysia.
Apple began its iPhone production in India in 2017, with Foxconn assembling the iPhone SE near Chennai. Over the years, Apple's latest iPhone models have been produced in India and exported by its contract manufacturers, including Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron. Tata's acquisition of Wistron's facility for $125 million last year marks a significant step in Apple's efforts to strengthen its ecosystem and reduce reliance on China.
