Biopax, a West Belfast-based sustainable packaging and label company, is preparing to introduce a cutting-edge rotary flexographic paper wrap printing and packing equipment. The project, which is scheduled to go live in November 2023, is likely to have a substantial influence on Biopax's offers for on-the-go deli and quick-serve restaurant solutions in the UK and Ireland markets.

In the past, the UK and Ireland relied on imports from Asia and Europe to meet their need for paper-wrapped food products. However, Biopax's most recent multi-million-pound investment is expected to increase domestic paper wraps supply by more than 500 million units per year. This strategic initiative intends to lessen reliance on imported products and corresponds with Biopax's commitment to ecologically benign and sustainable packaging solutions.

Paper bags with tamper-evident seals and PE-free solutions

Biopax is reacting to market demands with a continuous yearly growth rate of more than 25% in on-the-go, pharmaceutical, and quick-service restaurant products. Tamper-evident paper bags are being added to the company's product line, addressing the growing demand for secure packaging in the on-the-go food industry and pharmaceutical sector.

Biopax's packaging development team is also looking on a PE-free solution for the paper cup market. This programme aims to improve circularity in the rapidly developing market of single-use cups, while also addressing customer concerns about the insufficient recycling infrastructure for PE-lined coffee and beverage cups.

Recyclability and compostability advancements

To ensure consistent quality and satisfy client expectations, Biopax's new production line will include innovative auto-camera colour management and registration detection systems.

The company's paper wraps will meet sustainability targets by being recyclable, recyclable, and compostable. Plant-based grease barrier coatings will work admirably against hot foods, salads, and sauces.

Biopax's recent investment comes on the heels of a £20 million contract with printer maker HEIDELBERG, which solidified the company's position in the sustainable packaging market. The company has unveiled intentions to double the size of its Springvale Business Park property in West Belfast in the coming year to accommodate evolving customer needs. Biopax says it remains committed to investing in meeting both current and future client needs.
