The government's recent decision to confer the prestigious Padma Bhushan award upon Young Liu, the Chief Executive Officer of Foxconn, serves as a notable recognition of the Taiwan-based company's instrumental role in advancing India's Make in India initiative. Foxconn's unwavering commitment to India is not only a testament to the company's dedication but also reflects the government's broader strategy to position India as a key player in the global manufacturing landscape.
In tandem with honoring exemplary contributions, the government has implemented various measures to stimulate local manufacturing, including stringent quality control standards and tariff barriers. These efforts have yielded tangible results, particularly in sectors like toys, where exports have experienced a remarkable surge, escalating from $96 million to $326 million during the fiscal year 2022-23. The defense sector has similarly witnessed substantial growth, propelled by government policies such as local procurement and the establishment of defense corridors. Exports in the defense sector surged from Rs 700 crore in 2014-15 to an impressive Rs 16,000 crore in 2022-23.
While these success stories underscore the positive impact of the government's initiatives, there remains substantial ground to cover in achieving overarching manufacturing goals. Despite spirited efforts, the manufacturing sector's value addition to GDP continues to hover below the long-term average of 15-16%. According to advance estimates for the fiscal year 2023-24, the manufacturing Gross Value Added (GVA) as a percentage of nominal GDP stands at 12.8%. This figure falls short of the ambitious targets set by the government, aiming to elevate the manufacturing share in GDP to 20%, if not 25%.
In light of these challenges, it becomes evident that despite notable achievements, sustained and strategic efforts are essential to further fortify India's manufacturing ecosystem and achieve the ambitious targets set forth by the government. The recognition bestowed upon Foxconn's CEO signifies not just individual accomplishment but serves as a symbol of the collective push towards making India a formidable force in the global manufacturing arena.
