Honda to set up new EV

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Limited aims to dominate the Indian market in electric two-wheelers. To that end, the Japanese brand will open a standalone electric two-wheeler manufacturing unit in Karnataka, adjacent to its Narasapura plant, by 2028. The new unit will produce multiple electric motorcycles, starting with a commuter bike powered by a 4 kWh battery, similar to a 100 cc bike.

A modular production system will be adopted in this facility, so it can be adapted for mid-sized electric motorcycles in the future. This plant also focuses solely on the local Indian market and act as an export hub for developing markets.

This is Honda's second push into India's electric vehicle market. The company, in early 2025, had introduced two electric scooters, Activa e and QC1. This Activa e comes with a battery-swapping system, which Honda said will invest in swappable battery stations across key cities in the country such as Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.

Honda collaborates closely with the battery manufacturers to ensure that the supply of components is constant and reliable. Honda will produce swappable as well as fixed battery vehicles for the Indian market. It shows how serious Honda is in becoming an important player in India's rapidly growing electric two-wheeler market.
