HP and Google have partnered to produce Chromebooks in India at the Flex facility in Chennai, where HP has been producing a variety of laptops and desktops since 2020. The leading IT hardware company, which has also applied for the segment's revised PLI scheme, stated that this demonstrates its commitment to the government's Make in India initiative.
The facility will begin producing Chromebooks on October 2, 2023, to meet the demand for affordable PCs in India, primarily from the education sector.
"HP is dedicated to advancing digital equity, and we have spearheaded numerous initiatives to enable digital education throughout India." Manufacturing Chromebook laptops in India will provide Indian students with easy access to low-cost PCs. "By expanding our manufacturing operations, we continue to support the government's Make in India initiative," said Vickram Bedi, Senior Director - Personal Systems, HP India.
Chromebooks are the leading devices in K-12 education, assisting over 50 million students and teachers worldwide. These devices, which run ChromeOS, have built-in accessibility and security features to strengthen classroom connections and protect user data, according to a press release from HP.
"At Google, we've been collaborating with the local education ecosystem to help them transition to digital-first learning experiences through our products and teacher programmes." The local production of Chromebooks in collaboration with HP is an important step in our efforts to continue supporting India's digital transformation of education. "We hope that this collaboration will help accelerate the adoption of technology in more schools so that every student and educator has access to the tools and skills they need to reach their full potential," said Bani Dhawan, Google's Head of Education - South Asia.
