Around 99 percent of mobile handsets being used in India are domestically manufactured, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada stated in Parliament on Wednesday.

The production of domestic electronics has increased significantly in the last ten years, rising from ₹1,90,366 crore in FY2014-15 to ₹9,52,000 crore in FY 2023-24, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 17 percent, he stated.

"India has reached a stage where 99.2 percent of the mobile devices utilized in the country are domestically manufactured. India transformed into a mobile exporting nation instead of a mobile importing one in FY 2014-15, during which around 74 percent of all mobile phones sold in the country were imported,” the minister added.

As per industry estimates, approximately 2.5 million jobs, both direct and indirect, have been generated in the electronics industry, creating a significant contribution to the economy.

The government has approved the Semicon India initiative, allocating Rs 76,000 crore to enhance the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country. In addition, initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and the Scheme for the Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) are further supporting the growth of the sector.
