 India, US Expand Collaboration on AI & Emerging Technologies

PM Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump initiated a barrage of initiatives one after another. The exchanges were primarily between the two leaders and focused on how best to enhance cooperation in the area of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and civil space.

Amongst them, probably the most significant initiative is the announcement of the US-India TRUST initiative providing a roadmap for AI infrastructure and to forge the INDUS Innovation platform to create partnerships in the domains of defense, space, and energy.

The United States-India TRUST initiative ("Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology") has been announced to enable cooperation among governmental, academic, and industry partners. It will enable such advancements in the areas of defense, AI, semiconductors, quantum computing, biotechnology, energy, and space while ensuring technology security.

By the end of the year, a U.S.-India Roadmap will have been developed for accelerating AI Infrastructure which would recognize the capital, policy, infrastructure, and regulatory requirements for supporting U.S.-origin AI infrastructure in India.

INDUS Innovation was also launched, modeled after INDUS-X for industry-academic partnership, encouraging investments and partnerships in space, energy, and other strategically important technologies. In addition, the leaders expressed their mutual commitment to INDUS-X, committing to support defense collaboration between American and Indian companies during a summit planned for 2025.

Unveiling of the Strategic Mineral Recovery initiative, being focused on processing critical minerals, such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earths from heavy industries. In space cooperation, NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) through AXIOM will work to send the first Indian astronaut to the ISS. The leaders also highlighted a budget for mapping Earth's surface changes with the NISAR mission. Human spaceflight, satellite technology, and space manufacturing were also highlighted for future collaboration.

The U.S. National Science Foundation announced the scientific partnership with India's Anusandhan National Research Foundation based on AI, semiconductors, and next-generation telecom research. The two countries also pledged to expand high-tech commerce and address unfair export control practices to strengthen global supply chains.
