At the Mobile World Congress 2025 (MWC), Infinix has unveiled an intriguing prototype phone featuring an integrated solar panel on the back, along with a solar charging phone case. While both innovations are still in the concept phase, a functional demo suggests a promising future for solar-powered mobile devices.
Infinix refers to this new technology as "SolarEnergy-Reserving" based on perovskite solar cells. These are slimmer, more affordable to manufacture than conventional silicon-based panels. For effective power regulation to avoid overheating, the company has implemented Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). This technology maximizes voltage levels, enabling the solar panel to produce up to 2W of power - providing a slow, trickle charge that will prolong the phone's standby time when the phone is not being used actively.
Though the integrated solar panel is an interesting idea, the solar charging case could be the more practical alternative. It fits over the prototype phone through tiny side contacts to charge it. A phone that has a solar panel integrated directly into it isn't as versatile since the panel cannot be swapped for a normal case when charging with the sun isn't convenient - like for evening excursions. It may also be a convenient backup in case of power failure, providing an emergency charge where no electrical outlets are present.
In addition to its solar technology, Infinix is also highlighting its second-generation color-shifting E-Ink panel. This latest iteration is much better than the first one, which needed a power source to shift colors. The panel now runs on the internal battery of the phone, allowing users to customize their phones with dynamic patterns and customizable color palettes.
Users can upload photos, sync the display with real-time weather conditions, or even let AI generate unique themes. While traditional displays remain the mainstream choice, this color-changing E-Ink panel adds a creative and personal touch to the phone's design. With these forward-thinking technologies, Infinix is hinting at a future where mobile devices are not only more sustainable but also offer greater personalization and flexibility for users worldwide.
