Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) announced on Tuesday that it will invest Rs 120 crore in rooftop solar capacity at its Jajpur and Hisar plants. JSL said in a statement that a 21 MWp project will be set up in Jajpur, and another 6 MWp rooftop solar capacity will be installed at the company's Hisar unit.
"The two rooftop solar plants will generate approximately 795 million units of electricity over a 25-year period, with a carbon abatement potential of 5,64,450 tonnes," it said.
Both projects are expected to be completed by March 2024, according to the company, and the energy generated will be used exclusively for captive purposes.
Abhyuday Jindal, managing director of JSL, stated: "This is a significant step towards our net zero goal. Our commitment is to responsible business practises and the reduction of our carbon footprint. This practise will be continued."
The Hisar unit of the company has already completed rooftop solar projects totaling 4.1 MWp, capable of generating 110.7 million units of electricity and reducing 78,597 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
According to the statement, the company reduced its carbon emissions by 1.4 lakh tonnes in 2021-22.
