A survey on the level of innovation in manufacturing in India conducted by the government's Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) discovered that the state of Karnataka is not only the most innovative in its manufacturing sector, but also has the highest number of manufacturing companies that carry out innovations.
The National Manufacturing Innovation Survey (NMIS) 2021-22, released earlier this month, also discovered that the Northeastern states (excluding Assam) have the lowest level of manufacturing innovation, followed by Bihar.
According to the report, which surveyed over 8,000 firms in 28 states and six Union Territories (UTs), covering manufacturing and related service sectors as well as MSMEs, there is a need to increase manufacturing innovation. It stated that an increase in firm innovation has resulted in higher sales for them.

DST ranked Karnataka as the most innovative state, followed by Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Haryana. Among the hill states, Uttarakhand has the highest score, while Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have the highest scores among the UTs.
