Lenovo plans to double its smartphone and laptop production in India this fiscal year from the 6.4 million units manufactured locally in 2023-24, according to Shailendra Katyal, managing director of Lenovo India. Katyal stated that the firm will continue to boost local production each year, even as it commences establishing manufacturing for almost all its personal computer models in India, having already achieved complete local production for its Motorola smartphones.
Lenovo, having dual headquarters in Beijing and North Carolina, USA, has rapidly scaled up its production in India after participating in the government’s production linked incentive program and answering the government’s call for international brands to produce more domestically. For instance, during the years 2022-23, it produced five million units within the country.
“We are on target to locally produce over 12 million units in India this fiscal (24-25) as compared to 6.4 million units in FY24. This will help us to taper down imports progressively. We are also developing the component eco-system in India,” said Katyal. He said in the next fiscal (25-26), the local production will grow by 40% of what it will be in the current fiscal.
Lenovo presently produces laptops and desktops at its Puducherry factory, where it will soon start making artificial intelligence servers. In the meantime, Dixon Technologies, a contract manufacturer, creates Motorola smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
