Less than three months after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Telangana state government to invest Rs 1,500 crore in eyewear manufacturing, Lenskart has begun laying the foundation for the world's largest eyewear plant at Tukkuguda on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The new plant would be an in-house facility, just like the company's current unit in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. It would cater to the complete manufacturing process right from frame and lens to production of eyewear for both the domestic and export markets. "This facility will be instrumental in increasing Lenskart's manufacturing scale, catering to India, Asia, and the Middle East," the company added in a release.

Lenskart, Co-Founder of Amit Chaudhary's, who took part in the foundation ceremony along with Telangana Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu, said the plant would cover 50 acres and provide 2,100 employments. On December 8, 2024, when the MoU was signed, Chaudhary said the initial phase would become operational by the end of 2025. Once operating at full capacity, the plant can make more than 2 lakh glasses per day.

The facility will be equipped with advanced automation technology to ensure the production of high-quality eyewear for global markets.

"Today's ground-breaking marks a significant milestone for Lenskart as we continue to drive the future of eyewear through technology and innovation. This facility will not only help us meet the rising demand for eyewear but also open new opportunities," said Lenskart, CEO and Co-Founder of Peyush Bansal.

The Telangana government, which won the project over Karnataka, pointed out that the mega facility marks the state's increasing stature as a base for international industries. Lenskart had initially been eyeing a 25-acre plot close to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

Sridhar Babu's office highlighted that the investment will increase job opportunities and further establishes Telangana as a global hub for high-tech manufacturing. "This plant will have the latest technology and precision engineering, guaranteeing high quality and innovation in eyewear manufacturing," the statement further added.
