According to a company official quoted by the news agency PTI on September 21, MG Motor is considering establishing a second plant in India.
"We are looking into the possibility of establishing a second plant in India." A new plant typically takes two to three years to come online', Gaurav Gupta, deputy managing director of MG Motor India, told PTI.
The Chinese automaker has a manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat. The plant's annual production capacity is 1.2 lakh units.
As of now, the company has not said anything about the likely location of the second plant it is considering. MG Motor began operations in India in 2019. At present, the company has five models being sold here and their sales number around 5,000 units per month.
These five models include two electric vehicles (EV). According to sales data, EVs currently account for 25% to 30% of the company's India sales. MG Motor India currently sources batteries for its EVs from China. Gupta stated that the company intends to introduce a new model here every year. It could be an electric vehicle (EV) or an internal combustion engine (ICE).
"Our goal is to raise this percentage to 35% by 2025," he added. The company is also considering establishing a battery assembly plant near its existing Gujarat facility.
