Micron Technology announced that the initial phase of its manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, is scheduled to be operational by early 2025. Construction is underway, with Tata Projects engaged for the project, and the hiring process has commenced. The first phase encompasses 500,000 square feet of clean room space and is part of Micron's commitment to invest over $800 million in the overall $2.75 billion plant cost. The clean room will house an Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) plant, known for its near-zero dust and vibration environment.
Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron's President and CEO, shared this update during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. He highlighted that the company will adjust capacity according to global demand, with the construction of the second phase anticipated in the latter half of the decade. The combined investment from Micron and the Indian government, supporting the semiconductor ecosystem, totals $2.75 billion. The government's assistance includes funding for the project and access to crucial semiconductor infrastructure and resources, promoting innovation and talent development.
Gujarat was chosen due to its robust manufacturing infrastructure. Mehrotra expressed hope that Micron's investment would serve as a catalyst for additional sector investments, foster indigenous manufacturing, stimulate innovation, and contribute to job creation. Currently, Micron has hired 200 individuals undergoing training in Malaysia and Mohali. Upon completion of both phases, the facility is expected to generate 5,000 jobs.
This development aligns with India's efforts to bolster its semiconductor industry, fostering self-reliance and advancing technology manufacturing capabilities in the country. Micron's commitment reflects confidence in India's potential as a strategic hub for semiconductor production and contributes to the nation's goal of becoming a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
