By the next quarter, Alphabet Inc's Google has told its suppliers to start the production of Pixel smartphones in India at the earliest. This move would be carried out as part of its plan to ship more than 10 million Pixel phones this year. This news was reported by Nikkei today.
Google would start manufacturing smartphones in India and its flagship Pixel 8 will be available in 2024, it said last October, as it focuses more on a key growth market.
The Nikkei report further said that the move will also help Google diversify its supply chain away from China. Citing multiple sources, the report has added that the tech giant will prepare production lines for its high-end Pixel 8 Pro smartphones in the coming weeks.
They are up with the plans to start producing phones in the April-June quarter.
However, the report did not clearly say how many phones Google is actually planning to manufacture in India. Also, there is no clarity in whether the phones will be focused to be sold in the country or for exports.
Reuters request for comment but Google has come with any statement till now.
