Nissan Motor Co Ltd raised its sales targets for electrified vehicles on Monday and announced the construction of a second battery plant in the United States, as the automaker seeks to catch up in an industry increasingly dominated by newer players such as Tesla.

Nissan, a pioneer in electric vehicles with its battery-powered Leaf, has struggled in the face of increasing competition from Tesla and other newer entrants, as have many legacy automakers.

Nissan now expects electrified vehicles, including its advanced hybrid e-power vehicles, to account for more than 55% of its global sales by fiscal 2030, up from 50% previously.

It plans to introduce 27 new electrified vehicles by that year, with 19 of them being battery electric vehicles, according to a statement. It had previously predicted 23 electrified vehicles and 15 EVs.

According to Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta, the company also plans to build a second battery plant in the United States to help it meet the requirements of the Inflation Reduction Act.
