Renault Korea Motors intends to establish infrastructure to manufacture electric cars (EVs) at its facility in the southeastern city of Busan, according to the Busan city council.

According to a statement provided by the city, Renault Group Executive Vice President Guido Haak stated that the automaker wants to produce 200,000 EVs per year at its Busan facilities.

The idea was disclosed during Haak's visit to France this week, when he met with Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon and asked for South Korea's cooperation in transforming the Busan factory into its future manufacturing base, according to Park's office.

It was unclear how much Renault intended to invest in the EV manufacturing sites.

Hyundai Motor said in May that it will invest approximately 2 trillion won ($1.54 billion) in Ulsan, South Korea, to create a designated EV factory.
