Republican state attorneys general are criticizing their Democratic counterparts for urging President Joe Biden to shut down a major ammunition factory in Missouri. In a letter to the White House, all 28 GOP attorneys general expressed their disapproval, stating that the proposal is riddled with errors. The factory in question, the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, is one of the largest ammunition manufacturers in the country.
Reports from Bloomberg News and the New York Times suggest that the plant has produced high-powered bullets used in various mass shootings across the U.S., generating tens of millions of dollars for the Defense Department annually. The Democratic attorneys general have called for an investigation into the plant's contracting and manufacturing practices, citing concerns about its involvement in mass shootings.
However, the Republican attorneys general argue that the Democrats' focus should be on addressing crime and preventing mass shootings rather than restricting law-abiding Americans' access to guns and ammunition. They dispute Democratic claims that the ammunition manufactured for "military use" should be banned in U.S. communities, emphasizing that the plant follows ATF requirements and manufactures legally compliant ammunition.
The GOP leaders highlight that closing the Lake City plant would jeopardize national security and result in the loss of 500-700 jobs in the community. They accuse gun control advocates of attempting to criminalize ammunition manufacturing while neglecting the prosecution of criminals using firearms.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey stands with his counterparts, asserting that they aim to protect Americans' Second Amendment rights. He emphasizes that Lake City Ammunition did nothing wrong and opposes any sacrifice of law-abiding gun owners' rights for appeasement to the Radical Left. The White House referred comments to the Department of Defense, clarifying that they cannot direct an investigation into a specific entity.
