Jyotiraditya Scindia, the minister of steel, has given his approval for the creation of 13 task forces to determine action items for each component of green steel production and the adoption of sustainable manufacturing techniques. The task forces' areas of concentration will include raw materials, technology, and legislative frameworks for the manufacture of green steel. "We are dedicated to
advancing environmentally friendly steel production methods in India. Creating task forces is a crucial step in reaching this objective. We think that switching to green steel manufacturing will help the environment, as well as bring about employment growth and economic expansion "Scindia was cited as saying in a steel ministry statement.
The task forces will include representatives from the steel sector, academia, and government. The minister added that in order to lessen reliance on coal imports, steel makers must expand the capacity of their washeries. Also, he advised the players to look into fresh import coal suppliers.
In order to contribute to the government's goal of achieving a circular economy, Scindia has stated that his ministry will pressure primary steel companies to use 50% of their input from scrapped/recycled steel by 2047. The Minister has also stated that iron ore and coking coal may not be a feasible alternative in the future based on an ESG metric, and that the domestic steel industry must implement low-carbon emitting steel-making techniques.
