The State government has decided to establish a 'plug and play' manufacturing unit in Kancheepuram district to encourage start-ups and provide them with readymade facilities. Unlike other existing industrial estates, the 'plug and play' manufacturing facility would provide readymade space where businesses could begin production right away.

The project was assigned to the state-owned Electronics Corporation of India, which partnered with Tidel Park. This facility is located in the Vallam Vadagal taluk of Sriperumbudur's Sipcot Aerospace Park.

"Any start-up or fresh manufacturing unit, whether it focuses on the mobile or automobile sector, will have several formalities to identify a spacious land for manufacturing," a senior official from the department said. Even after that, production will take time because they must purchase the necessities.

The 'plug and play' facility, which will come with ready-made facilities in more than 11 lakh square feet and can accommodate around 100 companies, will help save manpower and time." The project to build the facility was started in 2020, according to the official, but it failed due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation and subsequent lockdown.

He noted that Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have already started building 'plug and play' units, saying, 'We have already floated a tender for civil construction, electrical works and other mandatory duties including landscaping and other external works'. The units will be leased to manufacturers. In a few years, all ready-made facilities will be completed to meet the needs of start-ups or businesses."
