Tesla has listed China-made Model 3 and Model Y cars for sale in Canada, according to the company's website, which confirmed the electric car maker had completed its first exports to North America from its Shanghai facility on May 23.

Tesla's website listed both rear-wheel drive Model Y vehicles and the long-range, all-wheel drive Model 3 as being available for immediate delivery in British Columbia, with codes indicating they were produced in Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai.

Both models are eligible for C$5,000 (US$3,700) federal incentives in Canada, which, unlike the United States, does not tie electric-vehicle subsidies to the site of the car's manufacturing plant.

Tesla representatives in China and at the company's headquarters in the United States did not reply to demands for comment right away.

Tesla announced last month that it would launch a new, lower-cost Model Y in Canada, a rear-wheel drive form of the SUV-styled crossover that would be eligible for Canadian government subsidies.

The cars that qualify for the discount on Tesla's website have a VIN code that indicates they were made at the company's Shanghai plant.
